Capabilities and install
Discover what ashlr-plugin can do, choose a host, install it, and verify your first MCP tool call.
ashlr-plugin is an MIT-licensed efficiency layer for Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Goose, and other MCP hosts. The local plugin is free with no account required. Optional Pro and Team services are paid separately.
Capabilities
| Need | Tools and documentation |
|---|---|
| Read code with less context | ashlr__read, ashlr__grep, and ashlr__glob |
| Understand a repository | ashlr__orient and the project genome |
| Make targeted changes | ashlr__edit, ashlr__multi_edit, and structural edits |
| Run and inspect work | ashlr__bash, ashlr__test, and ashlr__diff |
| Measure savings | ashlr__savings and benchmark methodology |
Savings are measured per tool call, not across an entire coding session. Read the complete tool reference for inputs and limitations.
Install
Requires Bun 1.3 or later. Supports macOS, Linux, and Windows; shell tools on Windows require Git for Windows or WSL. See the platform support matrix.
Installing the CLI does not register a host or approve its tools. Follow the host-specific installation guide for Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, or Goose. It also covers manual installation and uninstalling. Review permissions before enabling tools that write files, run commands, or contact external services.
Verify your installation
In Codex, run ashlr-plugin codex-doctor --json. In Claude Code, run
/ashlr-status and use /ashlr-doctor if the server is unreachable.
For MCP hosts, confirm that the registered server exposes ashlr__read, then
ask your agent to read a project file with it. The response includes a compact
view and token accounting. Follow the quickstart
for a complete first session.
Agent entry points
- llms.txt: generated index of README and documentation headings.
- llms-full.txt: README and complete documentation source in Markdown.
- Sitemap: canonical public documentation, product, and blog URLs.
- Source and releases: implementation, license, and version history.
The free plugin runs locally. Hosted features have separate data flows; consult privacy and telemetry documentation before enabling them.
